Natural Anti Aging Remedies – Whilst we avidly look to all the latest miracle creams to eliminate aging.  What about all the old fashioned remedies that we used to use.  Or any natural ingredients.  What comparisons can we make.  Often we accept the beauty industries outlandish claims (my opinion only.)  That by using the latest anti aging eye creams, serums and lotions it will make those ingrained lines disappear in a very short period of time.  The interesting thing is that the scientists have unveiled some interesting facts that we can certainly take advantage of and use in our everyday skincare.

There are a few things that are really just common sense in preserving the youthfulness of our skin.

Harmful to the Skin

  1. The Sun – I put this as No. 1 as this can certainly be the most damaging by causing the break down of the skins elastin and collagen and increases liver spots that quite frankly are not flattering at any age.
  2. Imitations of the sun that are overused such as sun lamps and  sunbeds and again we have all seen the scares involved in using these to excess.
  3. Smoking – again the effects on the skin can be drying and very damaging to the cells of our skin.

Always use a sun block and educate your children from a young age to do this.

Eating as much unprocessed foods as possible and making sure we have whole grains, olive oil, fruits and vegetables in our daily diet.

Daily exercise is vital and a massage and exfoliation can be extremely valuable.  We tend not to exfoliate our skin as much as we need to and I can recall my first experience of working in a Naturopathic Clinic where this was done daily and the results to the skin were outstanding.  I can see the benefits that it has on removing the dead layers of skin. Sometimes to the human eye the build up of dead skin is not visible.  By exfoliating you are removing the dead layers to leave behind freshly invigorated skin and of course any muscle stimulation gives new oxygen to these areas that also has beneficial properties to regenerated skin.  (See my previous article: http://www.infobarrel.com/Caring_for_your_skin_at_any_age ).  I have to add a cautionary warning here that some skin is very sensitive and some of the products on the market are not ideal for facial skin which is more delicate.  So please exfoliate with care on the face and most warnings on the reverse warn you against going close to the eyes.

One of my favourite tried and tested anti aging recipes are:

Echinacea Skin Soak

150ml warm water (filtered or bottled)

20 drops of Echinacea tincture (A great product to have in for cold remedies – try to get the one that is not alcohol based as can be an irritant to the skin.)

2 drops of sandalwood essential oil (quite hard to get hold of but really worth having)

Small cloth

Warm the water then add the echinacea and the sandalwood.  Soak the cloth in the mixture and place on your face for 10-15 mins.  (Lay down and relax at this point.)  I normally have the cloth warmed as well as it makes a more home spa feeling.  It also really opens up the pores.  Once finished dry your skin and apply moisturiser.

Rich Geranium Moisturiser

60ml avocado oil

60ml wheatgerm oil

25ml liquid lanolin

5ml beeswax pieces

2.5ml borax powder

30 ml rosewater

10-15 drops geranium essential oil

Use a glass bowl in a saucepan that is half full of water add the avocado and wheatgerm oils together.  Heating gently add the lanolin and beeswax pieces until the mixture has melted.  Add the borax powder to the rosewater and then add to the waxy mixture.  Stir through thoroughly and remove from the heat.  Cool a little and add the geranium essential oil.  This smells really lovely.  Keep stirring until very cool and add to small screw top jars.  This is great for a night time moisturising cream for face and body.  Also great to make for a gift.

Beautiful Smooth Skin For Any Age – Great tips

Beautiful Smooth Skin for any age

Simple Tips and tricks from teen’s to prevent aging

People often ask me how I keep my skin so beautiful and unblemished.  When I heard myself giving a long list of do’s and don’ts I realised that it may be something to share.  Some people often say that it’s your genes, or your DNA, but even if that has a part to play in youthfulness, the beauty industry is a multi million pound industry.  Why is that?  What are they really selling?  Do the anti-aging creams work?  The advertising does make you feel that the new improved eye cream will magically fade those light or deeply embedded crows lines away.  I am sure that many women have a cupboard full of moisturisers and eye creams that promise so much and deliver so little.  Do these consumers demand their hard earned money back?  No, it appears not.  What we do, is go and purchase the next miracle, anti aging busting cream, as we continue to search for the elixir of youthful and beautiful skin.  So the reason for penning my thoughts and to answer the initial question.  How do I keep my skin so unblemished?

Start a skincare regime early – at the start of menstruation.

* Cleanse, tone and moisturise without fail – daily – Tip! Apply cleansing lotion and remove with the hottest flannel you can manage.  Then using the toner this will cool the skin.  Scientifically your facial muscles have no stimuli.  The hot and cold reason.  Hot will make blood raise in the muscle and the cold takes the blood away.  When the muscle refills, it’s with fresh healthy blood and therefore stimulates the facial muscles.  This gives complete refreshment to those muscles that will not otherwise have any stimuli.  The  orbicularis oculi or eye muscle in layman’s terms are typical of this.  When you look at the eye muscle it’s a very circular band of fibrous muscle around the socket of the eye.

*  Vitamins – great to take regularly, as it’s also about healthy skin from the inside of your body. Vitamin A, E, both fat soluble vitamins.  Vitamin A for the epidermis and the E is great for the muscles.

* Drink more fluids, especially if you work in an air conditioned office.  Water is better than any other juices or fizzy drinks.  Hydrates the skin much better.

* Always wear a foundation with an SPF of 15.  It does protect your skin from the elements.

* Facial exercises - massage with your fingertips daily.  Gently with your small finger around the   eyes.

*  Wear sun glasses when the sun is shining and keep a light tint pair of glasses in the car when driving even in the winter.

*  Remember less alcohol as this certainly dehydrates the skin

*  Smoking – DON’T do it and if you really must, just purchase one of those old fashioned holders so it keeps away from your face as much as possible.

*  Have your skin assessed at least every 8 – 10 years.  Wood lamps are an excellent way of determining if you have dry, greasy or combination skin.

*

In relation to the above, one very important factor is your skincare MUST CHANGE as you get older.  Many people are in a rut with their skin care regime.  Please, do not be.  Go to that beauty counter and have a skin analysis done to determine your skin type.  As we get older our skin significantly changes.  Change as in life is a must for your skin to remain glowing and healthy.

Natural remedies to make sure you have the best looking feet on the beach this summer

Natural remedies to make sure you have the best looking feet on the beach this summer

One of the parts of our bodies that can be most overlooked are our feet. How much do we think about foot care?

Quite often we see even the most glamourous models and celebrities with ill fitting shoes and pictured with the most unsightly feet with bunions and corns and calluses.

Many people are having foot surgery to rectify years of neglect. Our feet may also suffer from having a serious illness or injury and even diabetes and poor circulation can have a damaging effect.  Our feet are made up of 26 bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, skin, blood vessels and nerves.  Its functions are to support the weight of the body or lever it off the ground.  It is a marvel of body engineering and this was mentioned by da Vinci himself.  We know that the feet are the hardest working part of the body and on average lift a total of at least ten cars of coal weight daily. Therefore by taking a few hours a week and using herbs that are growing naturally in your garden or items in your store cupboard you can ensure you have the most beautiful and cared for and healthy feet.

With wooden floors in our homes, this can often have a damaging effect on our feet, especially when walking around barefoot.  Another culprit for neglecting our feet is quite often in the family home a shower is more in use than having a bath and of course as you shower we are standing, so the feet again get overlooked.  Also as you get older it can be difficult and a chore to get into a bath without some support.  So the shower is seen as a much easier and safer option.

So what steps can we take to make sure that our feet are part of our daily care routine.

This practical article is to help get your feet in tip top condition in 7 days or less.

Equipment you will need

A foot Spa – Not essential but quite often it is one of those items that is often given as a gift and put away in a cupboard.

All you need is an old washing up bowl if you do not have a foot spa.

Cider Vinegar

Sea Salt

Olive Oil

Small pair of sharp scissors or proper nail cutters

Orange Sticks

Towel -

Pumice stone

Any Moisturising cream

Fresh Mint or Peppermint oil

If you have a cold or the start of one – crush a few garlic bulbs in a garlic press and add to the very hot water: (Be warned that within hours you will have the smell of garlic on your breath from absorbing through your feet!)

If you are feeling jaded and need some energy use some fresh basil.  Basil is a herb that is very easy to grow and even if you live in an apartment you can grow this in a small pot on a windowsill.

If you have very rough skin mix the sea salt and olive oil so that it is like a paste and apply to the rough areas and rub in and leave for at least an hour before following the routine below:

1.With boiling water – add a tablespoon of salt and a tablespoon of cider vinegar – also add the herbs of your choice -

2. Allow the water to cool so that you can add your feet and just relax.  Keep your feet soaked for as long as you can.

3. Once you have soaked your feet – dry thoroughly and make sure you dry well between the toes.

4. Using the pumice stone on all the rough areas of skin – gently brush the dead skin away.  Try to make sure you have your feet on a towel as you do this.  If your toe nails are really hard and look very rough.  Gently use the pumice stone to file down the hard nail on the top of the nail bed.  If at any point you feel anything or slight pain, then stop this immediately.  Often if the nail bed has accumulated a build up of very hard nail, (often referred to as club nail or rams horn nail) you will not feel anything.  If you keep persisting in this routine on a daily basis then you will find your nails will have some normality after several days treatment.

5. Now also cut and trim your toe nails while they are nice and soft and using the orange sticks push the cuticles of your feet back gently.

6.  Now apply the moisturising cream to your feet and ankles and really massage this in.

Follow this routine daily for seven days and then continue monthly and you will begin to see a great improvement in your feet.  It should also make you feel a lot more relaxed and is a great way of de-stressing after a hard day at work.
